Just the Two of Them: Rachael and Mitch’s Wild Waterfall Elopement in Grand Portage
When Rachael and Mitch first reached out to me, their original plan was to have a small wedding along Minnesota’s North Shore with a few family members and friends. But after spending some time exploring my website, they realized something: they didn’t have to do what was expected. They could have a day that was entirely about them, no guests, no pressure, just the two of them, doing whatever felt right.
And I absolutely loved that. They knew what they truly wanted, a day that reflected their love, their spirit of adventure, and their connection to nature.
Once they decided to elope, we started dreaming up a few different locations and eventually landed on Partridge Falls in Grand Portage, Minnesota, a hidden gem right on the Canadian border. In fact, there are little international line markers in the rocks, so technically, we were teetering right on the edge between the United States, and Canada for their ceremony.
When we arrived, the waterfall was roaring. Heavy rain in the days before had it rushing with incredible power, far more breathtaking than we could have imagined. None of us had ever been there before, which made it even more magical to discover this wild, beautiful spot together.
Rachael and Mitch exchanged their vows right in front of the falls, just the two of them, with me capturing every moment. Their words to each other were heartfelt and genuine, and the sound of the rushing water behind them made it feel like the earth itself was celebrating with them.
After their ceremony, we explored the area, taking photos and soaking in the magic of the place. As we were leaving, we ran into a couple of guys who had also come to check out the waterfall, the only other people we saw all day! We asked if they’d be willing to sign as witnesses on Rachael and Mitch’s marriage certificate, and they were thrilled. They couldn’t believe they’d get to be part of a real elopement and even asked if they could get a few photos afterward because they thought it was “the coolest thing ever.”
Next, we made our way to Kadunce River, where we hiked through the forest and even up the river, yes, through the river. Rachael and Mitch were completely fearless, wading through the water, climbing rocks, and exploring every hidden corner they could find. It was the perfect mix of adventure and romance.
To end the day, we headed down to the mouth of the river where it meets Lake Superior. They unpacked their canoe, paddled out onto the calm evening water, and shared a sweet little cake and champagne toast as the sun started to set. It was such a beautiful, peaceful way to close out their incredible day.
Afterward, Rachael and Mitch headed off for the next leg of their adventure: a week-long canoe trip through the Boundary Waters for their honeymoon. I can only imagine the amazing memories they made there, too.
Congratulations, Rachael and Mitch! I had an absolute blast exploring with you two. Days like this, intimate, adventurous, and full of heart, are exactly why I love what I do.
