How to Elope in Sedona: The Ultimate Guide to Epic Red Rock Weddings

Sedona is one of the most breathtaking places to elope, with its towering red rock formations, vast desert landscapes, and an undeniable sense of adventure. Whether you’re dreaming of a sunrise ceremony on a secluded mesa or exchanging vows beneath a glowing sunset, this place offers an unforgettable backdrop. But, with its growing popularity, planning your elopement here takes a little insider knowledge—especially if you’re hoping for a more private experience. As someone who spends most of the year in Sedona, I’ve got plenty of tips to help you find the perfect location, avoid crowds, and make the most of your elopement day.

Popular Elopement Locations in Sedona

Cathedral Rock

A legend among Sedona’s landscapes, Cathedral Rock is one of the most iconic elopement spots in Arizona. The glowing sandstone towers create a jaw-dropping backdrop, and at sunset, the light is pure magic.

The catch? Everyone knows it. This is one of Sedona’s busiest hikes, especially at sunset. If you want a more private experience, sunrise is your best bet (and trust me, the golden morning light here is incredible). Winter is also a quieter time to elope at Cathedral Rock, and if you’re lucky enough to catch a rare snowfall, the red rocks dusted in white will take your breath away.

📍 Hike Details: 1.2 miles round trip, steep with some rock scrambling. Only suitable for small groups.

🔎 Pro Tip: There are nearby spots with stunning views of Cathedral Rock that offer a more secluded experience—I’m happy to help you find them!

Doe Mountain

If you’re dreaming of a sunrise elopement, Doe Mountain is your hidden gem. As the sun rises over distant peaks, the entire landscape glows in warm, golden hues. Unlike Cathedral Rock, Doe Mountain has more space to spread out, making it easier to find a quiet spot away from other hikers.

📍 Hike Details: 1.5 miles round trip with switchbacks, moderate difficulty.

Bell Rock/Courthouse Butte

If you’re looking for easy access with stunning views, this is the place. You don’t have to hike far to be surrounded by breathtaking scenery, making it an ideal location for shorter elopement days or quick portrait sessions.

The downside? It’s a popular area, so expect some company.

📍 Hike Details: Short, easy trails with minimal elevation gain. Best for very small groups.

Merry Go Round

For couples who love adventure, Merry Go Round Rock is a dream elopement spot. It’s accessible via Schnebly Hill Road—a bumpy, off-road trail that requires a high-clearance 4×4. If you don’t have your own off-road vehicle, you can rent a Jeep or hire a guide to take you up. The sweeping views make the bumpy ride 100% worth it.

📍 Hike Option: 6.5 miles round trip if you prefer to skip the drive.

The Road Less Traveled

Looking for something even more secluded? That’s where I come in. I have a handful of secret Sedona elopement locations that I don’t advertise publicly—these hidden gems are reserved exclusively for my couples. When you book with me, I’ll help you find a breathtaking, lesser-known spot where you can exchange vows in complete peace.

Sedona Elopement Rules & Permits

The good news? Most elopement locations in Sedona don’t require a permit—as long as you’re not setting up chairs, arches, or other decor.

🚫 Where you can’t elope:

  • Wilderness areas (Devil’s Bridge, most caves, etc.)
  • Any location that explicitly prohibits ceremonies
  • Locations that require a permit but don’t allow events

Where you can elope:

  • Most National Forest land (but always double-check!)
  • Designated areas in state parks (with a permit)

You’ll also need a Red Rock Pass or America the Beautiful Pass to access most areas.

Getting to Sedona

Sedona may feel like a hidden gem tucked between towering red rocks, but getting here is surprisingly easy. While Sedona does have a small airport, it doesn’t accommodate commercial flights—only private and charter flights. Most travelers fly into one of two nearby airports before making the scenic drive into town.

✈️ Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) – The largest and busiest airport in Arizona, PHX is about a 2-hour drive from Sedona. This is the best option for those looking for the most flight options and rental car availability.

✈️ Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) – A much smaller airport with limited flights, but at just 50 minutes away, it’s the closest commercial airport to Sedona. If you can find a convenient flight into Flagstaff, this is a great option.

🚗 Driving Tip: The drive from Phoenix to Sedona is breathtaking, especially as you climb into the red rock country. If you’re flying in, I recommend renting a car so you can fully enjoy Sedona’s stunning landscapes and explore at your own pace!

Best time of year to elope in Sedona

Choosing the right season for your Sedona elopement depends on the experience you want. Each season offers something different, from cooler temperatures to fewer crowds—or both!

💙 Winter (Dec – March): My personal favorite! Sedona is quieter, the air is crisp, and if you’re lucky, you might get a dusting of snow on the red rocks—pure magic. Cooler temps make hiking more comfortable, and sunrise elopements are especially peaceful.

🍂 Fall (Sept – Nov) & 🌸 Spring (April – May): These are Sedona’s busiest seasons, and for good reason. The weather is perfect, the landscapes are vibrant, and there’s a buzz of energy throughout town. Just be prepared for more traffic, busier trails, and limited lodging availability.

🔥 Summer (June – Aug): Expect high heat (100°F+ in the afternoons). If you’re set on a summer elopement, sunrise is your best bet. Late summer also brings monsoon season, which can create dramatic skies and epic sunsets, but it’s unpredictable.
