Intimate Black Beach Ceremony + North Shore Adventure Elopement

Every once in a while, I get to photograph a couple whose day feels like it was written just for them — full of intention, beauty, and a little adventure. Vanessa and Sam are two of those people, and I feel so lucky to have been part of their story.

When Vanessa first reached out, she had a clear vision: a day that centered around her and Sam, with space carved out for their family to witness and celebrate their ceremony. The rest? Just the two of them, soaking in the moment and the magic of Minnesota’s North Shore.

We designed a day that did exactly that.

Their ceremony took place on Black Beach in Silver Bay, a place that’s already stunning but became even more special with their love as the focus. With the iconic rock island rising in the background, a family friend officiated, and loved ones took part in the ceremony in sweet and meaningful ways. It was heartfelt, intimate, and absolutely beautiful.

After saying their vows, we took family photos right there on the beach, and then — as their family packed up — it was time for our adventure to begin. Just Vanessa, Sam, and me, with no timeline to rush us and the North Shore waiting.

Our first stop was Palisade Head, where dramatic cliffs drop into the vastness of Lake Superior. The light was perfect, soft and golden, and these two couldn’t have looked more at ease — wrapped up in each other, laughing, and just soaking it all in. It was pure joy to witness and capture.

Next, we made our way to Gooseberry Falls State Park, where the waterfalls were flowing strong and the fall colors were in full, fiery bloom — exactly what they had hoped for. We explored, climbed over rocks, and took our time wandering through the trails, snapping photos along the way and having an absolute blast.

And then, to cap it all off? We stopped at Culver’s in Two Harbors, one of Vanessa and Sam’s favorite spots, and grabbed burgers for their wedding dinner — the perfect, relaxed way to end such an intentional and joyful day.

Afterward, they spent the rest of the weekend exploring the North Shore together, continuing their adventure just the way they wanted.

Vanessa and Sam — thank you for trusting me with your day, and for letting me tag along on such a beautiful journey. Wishing you both a lifetime of love, laughter, and many more trips for burgers and sunsets.
