Desert Vows Beneath the Superstitions: Melissa & Lance’s Intimate Arizona Elopement
Some stories are years in the making—woven together slowly, through time and friendship and a little bit of fate.
I’ve known Melissa since the days of lockers and lunch lines, back when we were both just kids growing up in Minnesota. We shared a circle of friends, and I was actually in the same grade as her older brother. Years later, when I was just getting started in photography, Melissa modeled for me more than once—those early sessions that helped shape this dream I now live. Life eventually pulled us in different directions—me to Georgia, and later to Arizona—but social media kept our thread intact.
And oddly enough, as I found my way to the desert, so did she.
Every winter, Melissa and her partner Lance escape the Minnesota chill and spend a month soaking up the Arizona sun, staying down in Apache Junction. Meanwhile, I was falling in love with this rugged landscape and learning to navigate the backroads with my Jeep. It was Lance, patient and encouraging, who took me on one of my very first off-road trails—one that was just enough of a challenge to build my confidence without pushing too hard. I credit him for sparking my passion for off-roading, and I’ll never forget that.
We had made a habit of meeting up in Arizona, laughing about how we always seemed to see each other more here than back home in the Midwest. That changed last summer when we finally connected in Minnesota too—but by then, the desert had already become a part of our shared tradition.
So when Melissa messaged me this winter with a secret, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. Lance had just proposed, and they’d decided to have a quiet little ceremony right here in the desert that had become their second home. And—cue the tears—they asked me to photograph it… and officiate it.
Now, I’ve signed my name to many a marriage license, but this was the first time I would actually stand in front of a couple, speak the words, and guide them through their vows. It was intimate, heartfelt, and completely perfect.
The weekend began with an all-day off-roading adventure up Montana Mountain near Superior, AZ. It had recently rained, and the trails were dotted with mud puddles that made the ride all the more exciting. Melissa and Lance led the way in their side-by-side, with a crew of friends tagging along in theirs. I had their friends Kelly and Krissa riding with me in the Jeep, and we all had the best time chasing views and splashing through the desert. You could feel the joy buzzing through the air.
Sunday, the day of the elopement, was quiet and calm in the best way. Melissa picked up her bouquet, got ready with her best friend Kelly (who flew in from Minnesota), and we made our way out to the spot they’d scouted weeks before—just the two of them, Lance’s brother, Kelly, and me.
Their ceremony spot was tucked away with sweeping views of the Superstition Mountains and a whole forest of towering saguaros standing as quiet witnesses. It was short, sweet, and full of emotion. Kelly took over my camera while I stood with them and spoke the words that would seal the next chapter of their story. There wasn’t a dry eye in sight.
Afterward, we lingered—took some photos, shared a few laughs, and just soaked in the moment. Back at the campground, their friends had set up a surprise: a beautifully decorated tent and a cozy dinner under the stars.
Being part of this weekend, both behind the lens and standing up front, was such a full-circle moment. From school days in Minnesota to Jeep trails in the Arizona wild, this friendship has traveled far and wide. And now, it holds one more memory: the day Melissa and Lance promised forever in the desert.
