An Autumn Elopement Adventure in the Red Rocks: Val & Sam’s Sedona Story

Once upon a fall day in the red rocks of Sedona, Val and Sam set off on their wedding adventure—and it was nothing short of magical.

I knew I was going to love these two from our very first discovery call. They’re a fun-loving couple from Wisconsin (close to where I grew up!), and we instantly bonded over our mutual love for dachshunds. They had me cracking up when they casually referred to one of my website photos of a friend of mine as “Hunky Jesus.” It was a perfect mix of humor and heart, which pretty much sums them up.

Sam proudly rocks long hair (which they appreciated seeing on a lot of my grooms!), and they knew from the start that Sedona was the place they wanted to say “I do.” Their vision included bringing family in from all over, so we found a ceremony location that was both stunning and accessible for a group—plus a perfect dinner spot to celebrate afterward.

On the big day, I met them at their gorgeous Airbnb where Helliana from Red Cheek Beauty was adding the final touches to Val’s look. She had already done an incredible job on both Val’s hair and Sam’s. The vibe in the Airbnb was relaxed and joyful—everyone just hanging out, soaking in the day.

Before heading out for their first look, Val shared a private moment with her son, reading heartfelt vows to him. It was such a beautiful, grounding part of the day—a moment of love that felt like its own little ceremony.

Although Sam had seen Val during makeup, her dress was still a secret. So we blindfolded him and loaded everyone up—me in my Jeep, and the rest of the crew in a party bus (a smart move when navigating Sedona’s busy parking scenes in peak season!).

At the trailhead, Val carefully led Sam—still blindfolded—to their first look spot. When she was ready, she removed the blindfold, and his reaction said it all. The way he looked at her… it was like time slowed down.

Their ceremony took place at Baby Bell, a hidden gem with wide open views of Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Courthouse Butte. Val’s sister officiated the ceremony, and it all flowed so naturally—personal, heartfelt, and surrounded by those gorgeous red rocks. After a champagne toast and some family photos, the group hiked back to the bus while Val, Sam, and I stayed for golden hour portraits. The light was pure magic.

We wrapped up the portraits and made our way to Sedona Beer Company for a quick celebratory drink, and then on to their dinner reception at the Cabin by Cowboy Club. It was the perfect cozy venue for their intimate celebration. Inside, there was a lovely setup for dinner; outside, a cocktail area, bar, and even a dance floor under the stars. Ryan Bitter provided live music that set the perfect tone for the evening. The food, the laughter, the music—it all came together like a dream.

Val and Sam’s day was filled with the kind of moments that matter most—connection, intention, beauty, and joy. I feel so lucky to have been a part of their story.

Wishing these two all the love in the world as they step into this next chapter—dachshunds, long hair, red rocks and all.
